The first Department Summer Quiz took place on Tuesday 16 June in the Pfizer Lecture Theatre with 16 teams and 56 members of the department competing for the trophy; newly made by our amazing workshop team! 

Sona Krajcovicova joined the Spring group in 2021 as a postdoctoral researcher after completing her PhD in organic chemistry and chemical biology. We are wishing Sona a fond farewell as she jets off to start her own independent research group at the Faculty of Science, Palacký University in Olomouc, Czech Republic, from October 2026, as a junior group leader.

This June, Dr Dijana Matak Vinkovic, who is a Senior Technical Officer in our mass spectrometry facility, represented our department at the American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS) conference in San Diego; which is one of the most influential global meetings in the field.

Dr Alex Kersting has been announced as part of the Foundation Future Leaders 2026, a prestigious one-year programme run by Foundation Future Leaders 2026 - FST. The programme brings together mid-career professionals from academia, industry, government and policy, offering opportunities to build cross-sector networks, explore how science, technology and policy intersect, and develop leadership skills for future impact.

Dr Charlie Wartnaby, a research associate in the Centre for Atmospheric Science in Prof Alex Archibald's group, has finished the London Marathon for the last 17 years in a row (including the virtual race that replaced the 2020 London Marathon).

Hannah Warren, a second-year PhD student in the Duer Group, won the Women’s Lightweight Boat Race with her team from the Cambridge University Boat Club against the University of Oxford. The race was on 3rd April and hosted on a 6.8k long stretch of the River Thames between Putney and Mortlake. It was first raced by crews from Oxford and Cambridge University in 1829 and is now one of the oldest and most famous amateur sporting events.

Alice Duret-Sauquet, of the Scherman group, is joining the student-led oceanic exhibition ‘Odyssciences’ to collect data on the Mediterranean and Atlantic oceans.
